Building a Custom Wreath

One of my customers requested that I make him a new wreath for his front door!

I don't get many custom orders, but when I do.... I love it!

I started with a grapevine wreath, that was already covered in greenery.

I start by adding my biggest pieces...

the fruit and the orchids, this will be the focal point.

Little by little...

piece by piece...

she's getting there...

His house color is a cream and his door barn red,

I want this wreath to pop and compliment the front of the house!

I love using these vines to wrap around, it gives some nice texture and depth.

Using a lot of different flowers, but in the

same color combination adds to the texture as well.

A lot of different greenery helps add interest too.

Done!

I would love to have this on my front door!

(If only I could afford it!)

From a Damsel in Distress.....

She has turned into a real beauty!

I would love to have her in my own home, but we can't keep every

incredible piece that comes along, I am sure she will go to a very good home!

I got this girl for a steal at a yard sale, because she needed some work...

...but I knew I was plenty capable of fixing her up!

I forgot to take a pic when she was right side up!

She is one heavy girl... solid oak!

None of the hardware was original and I could tell she was

once painted green and stripped down to what she is here.

She has some beautiful details.

One of her drawers didn't slide all the way in, so that needed to be sanded

quite a bit and the two top drawers needed stoppers put in (not a big deal)!

She's primed! Ready for a pretty pale aqua paint job!

Here it is after... I was loving how this piece was turning out!

I knew these doors would make the piece!

Here she is in all her glory!

Don't you just want to take her home!

A Hutch Transformed

A quick peek of her after the transformation.

Here she is before, lacking some personality...

but she has lots of potential!

The top was made after (in pine) to fit on top of what used to be an oak sideboard.

Her two pieces will mesh nicely once they are both painted the same color.

She's all primed with a coat of paint!

She's put back together and distressed. I added a back to the top with

some plate rails to the shelves. She has lots of personality now!

She would be perfect in someone's cottage dining room or kitchen!

My Firelace and Mantle

The brick went from dirty and dingy to bright white and beach-y!

First I cleaned it with foaming bathroom cleaner and a scrub brush.

Here's the mirror before, I struggled with whether or not to paint it,
but I am glad I did. I found the frame in my favorite junk shop for $5,
then had a mirror made to size for around $60.

The walls here are a pale yellow, which I hated, so they were

re-painted in a brown with mauve undertones, I like it so much better!

This is how it looked on Valentine's. The walls re-painted, the brick
painted and the mirror frame, which I loosely painted two colors,
then distressed so that it looked like layers of paint.

Here we are all bright and beach-y!

My chair needs to be re-covered, so right now it has this pretty table
cloth on it, which I purchased for less than $1 (at my favorite junk shop)

and the pillow came from a thrift store for .50 cents.

I love vintage planters and bottles,
you will find them everywhere in my house!

The pictures are strategically placed to cover the plugs on either
side of the mirror, some day I'd like to have some frenchy-antique sconces
with crystals, but this will do for now : )

Bottles and sea shells!

The fireplace hasn't been used in years,
so I have filled it with some more of my treasures.

The top piece was the start of a boat my grandfather was making,
I like it just the way it is!

As you can see, I still haven't finished painting all the brick...

Old boxes are stacked on top of this suitcase, this was a freebie!

I love these old bicycle baskets!

My son and I collect rocks from the beach and I mark with

a sharpie which beach they came from and the year.

That's my fireplace and mantle!

Decoupage Plain Wooden Knobs

I have never seen wooden knobs this large, and they are flat!

Perfect for decoupage and creating a unique look!

I started with a blank canvas, after painting this blue dresser, off-white.

I found an image I liked, pulled it into photoshop and created circles

a touch smaller than the knobs so I would still be able to distress the edges.

I printed them out, cut them, and time to decoupage!

Here it is, applied. Now for distressing!

There it is! I hop you found this inspiring!

A great way to update wooden knobs for next to nothing!

Roadside Find to My Kitchen!

I saw this piece for free on the side of the road and thought....

I could definitely do something with that! So, in my Jeep it went!

I have a galley kitchen, so I have a bureau in my kitchen for extra storage and this fit perfectly on top! I was so excited, now the bureau looks like a hutch!

I am re-doing my kitchen cabinets in white, stainless steel appliances

and greige walls, which is still in process.

Here are some before pics...

It's solid pine and just needed a few coats of fresh white paint.

This was just what my kitchen needed!

My milk glass collection went on top...

...along with my black and white scale, keeping with the color scheme.

I pulled my canisters out of the cabinet,

I found these at a flea market years ago for $6!

Putting the toaster oven here, freed up some counter space.

My spices fit underneath, along with a bowl for fruit.

My cook books fit on the shelves inside and my mail gets hidden in there too!

This bureau I picked up at my favorite junk shop a few years back for $25

I love the way my kitchen is starting to come together!

Architectural Salvage Coat Hook

This is the stuff I love!
Taking found objects and re-purposing them into something practical and unique.

I picked up these architectural salvage pieces at a yard sale, along with a box of door knobs.

I distressed the wood a little more, using an orbital sander.
You can see a little yellow popping through around the edges.

I drilled a hole and added a screw in order to attach the knob with epoxy.

Not sure what these things are, but I picked them up at
my favorite junk shop, they work perfect for around the knob.

They have little teeth, so I just hammered it
into the wood around where the knob will go.

I picked up this epoxy at Walmart for around $3.

Filled the inside of the knob with epoxy and placed it over the screw.

Perfect fit!

I added a picture hanger with teeth on the back for hanging.

This didn't last long in the shop, it sold with in a few days!

Sap Buckets Turned Planters!!

I LOVE These!!

The fellow that works a few doors down makes maple syrup and he had

some less than perfect buckets he wanted to sell and wondered if we were interested?

My eyes lit up... I said YES!!!

I decided to make planters out of them! They each have a hole

in the top back where an S hook can be put for hanging.

I've been seeing a lot of bloggers using stencils and I love the look!

So off to the hardware store I went and found exactly what I was looking for!

NUMBERS!

Why? Don't know, just thought they would look cool.

You could have your house number put on them!

I used stencil paint and a stencil brush. This paint takes a few days to dry.

Lucky number 8!

Can you picture chartuesse sweet potato vine hanging

out with some bright orange and purple pansies?!

Ahh... spring has finally arrived!

They are sitting on this awesome bed bench that my Mom made!

Burlap Coffee Bean Sack Turned Pillow Sham!

I found these burlap coffee bean sacks at a yard sale last summer and

thought they were really cool . I decided to turn them into pillow shams!

This is how they looked when I began.

I cut them to size for use as a standard pillow sham.

Once again, I should have taken more during pics : (

I used some pieces of white linen I had left over from another project

to make a band around the opening and to make some ties.

I wish I had more designs to work with, maybe I'll find some different brands in the future.

Today I was in Home Goods and noticed they had boxes covered in what looked

like burlap coffee bean sacks (almost decoupaged). They looked really cool, and may be

one of my next projects! What a fun idea for storage!

Maybe not the softest thing to lie back on, but certainly cool to look at!

Hmmnn... what's the word I am looking for?

Contradicting?

Sleep... coffee beans... it never crossed my mind until now!

Perfect for a sun porch and so comfy!

Here she is before... she's got great bones!

I primed, painted and distressed.

(I get so into the rehab, I forget to take pics.)

I found this pretty yellow embroidered fabric, perfect for spring!

I made two zippered slip covers for the pillows.

I love the rope detail on the sides, I painted right over it!

I made this pretty little pillow with a ruffle to match

using the same yellow fabric, along with some vintage fabric.

Repurposed Desk into Foyer Catchall

This was one of those items I spotted at a yard sale and thought...

"How can I re-purpose that?"

Ah-ha! Got it!

Here are some before pics...

As you can see it used to be a secretary desk, but the piece

that you would fold down and sit at was no longer there!

So I filled where the hinges used to be, with wood filler and sanded.

The molding at the bottom was missing too!

But I do love the hardware!!

After the wood filler was dry and sanded

I primed, painted, added new molding and distressed.

I added two baskets that fit nicely inside the open area, they match the hardware too!

You can use these baskets for sorting mail, hats and gloves... you name it!

I really should have taken more during pics, but as usual...

...I got caught up in the process of making sh*t shine : )

Meet Camelia!

Here she was in her "before" state,

but as you can see she has a lot of potential!

First, she was primed (with Zinsser Bin), then a new coat of paint.

I also added a piece of anaglypta to the center back for a little interest.

Time to distress!

I use an orbital sander on the edges.

You can see the layers of paint, which I love.

After all the distressing is done, I go over all the edges with Howard's Beeswax.

It nourishes the raw wood and brings out the grain giving it a more finished look.

I added foam and batting to the seat and

covered it with this pretty Laura Ashley fabric.

I also made a pillow to match...

...and a table runner with a ruffle, I love ruffles...ahh!

The perfect accent piece!

Now a Happy Hope Chest!

This hope chest was brought in by one of our customers to get a "makeover".

Here's the before, don't you just love the hardware?

(Being sarcastic, of course!)

And this fabric?

These are all things she wanted changed, along with a new paint job!

I started by taking off all the old hardware and removing the top.

I filled the double holes where the hardware was and drilled a new single one.

Then I primed.

She wanted the chest painted in our pretty light aqua blue, then distressed.

We added crystal knobs for an updated shabby chic look.

I recovered the top in a light colored canvas, keeping it simple so her room
wasn't too busy. I also made her some accent pillows (which I neglected to take a pic of) using the same canvas and some vintage material that she has on a chair in her room.

Putting the pieces back together!

This little bureau was rescued from a yard sale,

it needed lots of love and I was the one willing to give it!

Here is the before pic, it was in pieces! The top was detached
and in two pieces and the door was off, not to mention it was filthy!

I should have taken more pics of the putting back together process,
but I didn't! I re-attached the top with finish nails, counter sunk them and filled with
wood filler, then sanded. Now it needed a coat of primer. I always use Zinser's Bin
with shellac, it even works on shiny surfaces, so there's no need to sand!

I painted it parchment white and distressed using an orbital sander.

I sprayed all the hardware black, they really pop against the off-white.

Re-attached the door and added a new knob.

All done!! What a difference! I also lined all the drawers
with wallpaper used from discontinued wallpaper books.
You can ask your local wallpaper store to call you when
they have some discontinued books, that's what we did.

She's already in her new home!

Transformation of a Bureau

This was a sad, sad bureau when I got it, you can see why it was a freebie!

Missing hardware...

...no runner on the bottom drawer (you can see how crooked it is).

What this baby needed was a paint job and a little L-O-V-E!

The top was kind of gross, so I cleaned it up and used the embossed

wallpaper (anaglypta) on the top, which made it look extra special!

This bureau has a lot of pretty details, like the columns on the sides.

The details show up nicely once painted and distressed.

The paint I used was "Cream In My Coffee" by Valspar,

one of my favorites with it's pink undertones!

I found some hardware to match and sprayed them all black.

Here she is after her transformation!

Even prettier with a mirror to match!

This mirror found a different home than the bureau,
Amy, from Maison Decor purchased it for her vanity,
check out her post (link above) to see how it looks in it's new home!

This bureau will be getting an attached mirror
with the same shape as this one, it will be perfect!

Sewing Machine to Desk... or Vanity... or Sewing Table... So Many Options!

Okay, now this is what it looked like before!

This housed a Kenmore sewing machine!

I thought it would make a great desk, vanity, or sewing table.

So, I removed the guts...

...and filled the hole using a

1 inch piece of pine, supported by some metal brackets.

I used wood filler to fill in any gaps, then sanded.

It's getting there!

I spray painted all the hardware black.

Here it is all put back together.

If you need space to spread out, you're all set!

The paint color is called White Sage by Behr.

I just love the detailed molding around the bottom!

Another Take on a Valentine's Banner!

Now part of the "Lonely Hearts Club", I wasn't going to decorate for

Valentines or celebrate for that matter, but...

I still wanted it to be special for my little Valentine, Sullivan!

I found many of these vintage Valentines from the Graphics Fairy,

some I already had and some I created in Photoshop with various elements.

The first and third I created in Photoshop.

I created a pdf, so if any of you would like to create your own, click here!

I punched two holes at the top and used ribbon to string them together.

I created the first and third here also, layering different images.

I also cut around each one with scalloped

edged scissors to really give them that vintage feel.

Snowy Weather....

Okay... I've had enough!!

I do love this picture though, taken from my upstairs bathroom window.
It's very calm and serene, with flakes still falling from the sky in the sunshine.

We have really been hit hard with snow storms this winter,

my son has had one snow day a week for the past month!

This is our pathway out the door!

My little guy isn't even happy about it anymore!!

I'm very grateful that my neighbor snow blows a path

from our driveway to theirs, which is where the bus stop is.

It's a good thing we don't use the front door!

I will be painting the house in the spring/summer a light grey like our

shed out back, probably time for the eagle above the door to go too!

This pic is taken from the driveway, we use this side entrance.

Can't wait for spring!! Let's hope the groundhog is right!

From Blah to Beautiful!

This cabinet received a complete overhaul!

I believe it used to house a stereo of some sort.

It's second time around, it can be used for all kinds of great storage!

For dishes in a kitchen, clothes in a bedroom, blankets, in a bathroom to store towels, etc. And for those of you who like to sew, you could store all your fabric in here!

It was quite a job getting these shelves back into working order!

I covered all the shelf surfaces with anaglypta.

Now her insides look as pretty as the outside!

She's ready for her hardware, I used the

original hardware and spray painted them black.

Now time for a little distressing and she'll be ready to go!

Isn't she pretty?
